At a time when the workplace is in flux, we need to learn from one another more than ever. Reworked TV's Three Dots debuted on April 24, 2024 to bring conversations with digital workplace leaders to the foreground so you could hear about what your peers were doing, how they overcame common (and sometimes not so common) challenges and what their biggest lessons were.
Lessons From Season One of Three Dots
While we could have rung a cow bell every time AI came up, it was by no means the main focus of these conversations. Season One found workplace leaders grappling with some fundamental challenges around change management, onboarding, knowledge management and detangling a maze of corporate intranets. Here were some of our biggest takeaways:
Technology Is About the Humans as Much as — or More So — Than the Tech
Shaelyn Otikor-Miller has worked in the digital workplace space for over two decades, yet she admits that it's only in recent years that she realized her job was about more than building cool stuff.
"The pace of change is so fast right now. The technology is outpacing the business models, the operating models, the learning and adoption curve. I also call it digital disruption due to some of the emotional impact technology has on people every day, specifically when you take processes or platforms that they've been used to working on for years and decades and move them to a completely different system. It's not just a transformation for them. This has disrupted their day-to-day thinking and their way of life and has forced them to adapt to a completely new way of getting things done." Hear more from Shaelyn in episode 8.
The Cost of Small Inefficiencies Really Add Up
To make his argument for a more streamlined, integrated digital employee experience, Chris Harrer added up the time employees wasted on a multi-click paid time off process. He found employees spent 17,000 hours annually due to this inefficiency, which translated to roughly $890,000 in lost productivity costs.
"Just discovering all those things that you can accomplish within the intranet without having to leave, that's the stuff that's going to bring employees there, which then they'll say, 'Oh, you know what? While I'm here, let me just read this article that popped up.'" Hear more from Chris in episode 2.
Digital Workplace Success Depends on Strong Change Management
Jen Schettino started preparing BlackRock employees for their new New York City physical and digital headquarters months before they ever set eyes on it. After years of planning, implementation and roll out, she knew how critical this piece of the puzzle was to the long-term success of the new workplace.
"Change management was the key to our success and really helped people to understand before they ever stepped foot in that building what they were getting. I think it really helped us in the weeks and months that followed." Hear more from Jen in episode 5.
IT Needs to Become a Strategic Partner, Not a Ticket Fulfillment Center
Frank McAloon is using data to improve day-to-day life for CVS Health employees. Through a number of solutions built in-house, he moved CVS Health's IT department into a proactive partner rather than a reactive isolated department.
"We want the data to come up with that spider sense that can help predict certain situations with our colleagues before they happen. So we want to be proactively addressing potential issues. The aim is to enhance the overall digital experience for our colleagues before the problems arise." Hear more from Frank in episode 6.
