NotebookLM, Google's "tool for understanding things," is getting a new name: Gemini Notebook. It will remain a standalone tool, but will show up in more places across Google, including in Gemini app and Google Search.
The company also introduced a secure cloud computer for each notebook, that can write and run code against the files a user has uploaded. In theory, this means the tool can move from providing answers to conducting data analysis within notebooks.
First unveiled as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023, NotebookLM first caught mainstream attention with its Audio Overviews feature, which turned documents into two-host podcasts. It has since grown to more than 30 million users and over 600,000 organizations, according to Google.
The cloud computing capability is available now for Google AI Ultra users and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Google said it will roll out to all Pro users on the web over the coming weeks, with integration into AI Mode in Google Search planned soon after.
