SAP used Sapphire 2026 to make its biggest push into agentic AI, launching unified AI platforms and autonomous agents across HR, finance and ERP.

In Brief

  • SAP consolidates its technology, data and AI platforms into one governed environment for building and deploying enterprise AI.
  • More than 50 Joule Assistants and 200+ specialized AI agents will automate business processes across finance, HR, supply chain, procurement and customer experience.
  • New Autonomous HCM capabilities introduce assistants for payroll, hiring, workforce planning and upskilling.

Orlando, Fla. — SAP used its annual Sapphire conference today to roll out a unified AI platform, more than 50 AI assistants that can automate end-to-end business processes and a new user experience that puts natural language ahead of screen navigation.

The announcements mark the company's most aggressive move yet to make agentic AI the default way enterprises run on SAP. The announcement spans more than 10 new products, domain-specific automation across every major business function and expanded partnerships with Anthropic, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Palantir and Accenture.

Major Announcements Out of Sapphire

SAP Business AI Platform

The centerpiece is the SAP Business AI Platform, which merges three previously separate products — SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Business AI — into one environment where companies can build, deploy and govern AI agents. It includes the SAP Knowledge Graph, essentially a map that gives agents access to a company's business data, processes and organizational relationships so they can act on real context rather than generic prompts.

Joule Studio, SAP's tool for building enterprise agents and agentic workflows, is generally available now. It supports no-code and pro-code development on SAP-managed infrastructure.

SAP Autonomous Suite

SAP Autonomous Suite adds AI agents to existing SAP applications so they can run processes end-to-end without manual intervention. It includes more than 50 domain-specific Joule Assistants across finance, supply chain, procurement, HR and customer experience, each orchestrating from a pool of over 200 specialized agents.

Flagship example: The Autonomous Close Assistant is designed to compress the financial close process from weeks to days by automating journal entries, reconciliation and error resolution.

SAP also launched Industry AI — seven autonomous solutions that embed sector-specific process logic, data models and regulatory requirements.

Joule Work: A New User Experience

Joule Work is SAP's new front door to its software. Instead of clicking through individual applications and screens, users describe what they need in plain language — close the books, fill an open headcount, reforecast Q3 — and Joule figures out which workflows, data and agents it needs to finish the work. It also works in the background, surfacing alerts and automating routine tasks without being prompted. It will work across SAP and non-SAP systems on desktop, mobile and voice.

The Joule Work mobile app is generally available now. A new partnership with LiveKit adds intelligent voice capabilities (available now in Early Adopter Care; GA planned H2 2026). General availability for Joule Work desktop and bidirectional agent-to-agent (A2A) capabilities is planned for Q4 2026.

Autonomous HCM (Planned November 2026)

SAP said Autonomous HCM automates payroll, recruiting, workforce planning, upskilling and organizational modeling across the employee lifecycle. The assistants integrate with SmartRecruiters (acquired September 2025), SAP SuccessFactors, SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP Cloud ERP, SAP Fieldglass and SAP Business Data Cloud.

CapabilityDescription
Joule Assistants for HRCoordinate agents for payroll, hiring and HR workflows
AI-Enabled Workforce PlanningAgents plan and recommend workforce actions in real time
Workforce Upskilling AssistantDelivers personalized microlearning via Teams and Slack
AI Organizational ModelingEnables scenario simulation in SuccessFactors Employee Central

Note: SmartRecruiters will replace the existing SuccessFactors recruiting module, with customers given 3 to 5 years to migrate.

Learning Opportunities

AI-Enabled Enterprise Planning (Planned Q3 2026)

AI agents in SAP Enterprise Planning can pull in internal and external data, model the impact on KPIs, simulate scenarios and recommend actions — shifting planning from a periodic exercise to a continuous one. When a decision is made, Joule Agents can update downstream plans automatically. A new workforce planning capability for SAP SuccessFactors extends this beyond finance.

Supporting Announcements

Partner funding: SAP launched a €100 million fund for partners to deploy AI assistants and agents or build new ones on SAP Business AI Platform using Joule Studio.

Key partnerships: Anthropic's Claude will serve as a primary reasoning and agentic model powering Joule agents. NVIDIA provides the trusted secure runtime for Joule Studio. AWS brings zero-copy data integration with Amazon Athena. Google Cloud and Microsoft enable bidirectional agent-to-agent interoperability. Mistral AI and Cohere deliver sovereign model options.

Pending acquisitions: SAP agreed to acquire open data lakehouse Dremio, with the deal expected to close in Q3 2026. It also acquired Prior Labs, a tabular foundation model company, and committed more than €1 billion over four years to scale it into a frontier AI research lab.
