Cultivate curiosity, navigate risk and other strategies to stay agile.

Agility is the currency of success in today’s rapidly evolving landscape. As professionals, we must continually sharpen our skills to thrive amidst change. Over my 20-year career advising executives and organizations, I’ve witnessed shifting management trends, evolving paradigms and emerging workplace patterns. Amid the current AI paradigm shift, certain skills will distinguish you and help you rebound from setbacks.  Let’s explore five practical strategies that will consistently benefit both you and any company fortunate enough to  employ you.

1. Cultivate Curiosity

As we grow older and take on ever-increasing responsibilities, it’s easy to lose touch with the wonder and curiosity we experienced as children. Remember when “Why?” was our favorite word? As adults, we often dismiss curiosity as a distraction, but what if it holds the key to personal and professional growth? Why is a powerful word!

Take a page from six-year-old you and inquire about the world around you. Why does a process work this way? What if we approached a problem differently? Curiosity isn’t just about satisfying our intellectual itch. It’s a tool for gaining insight and meaning from our experiences, so embrace your inner child by asking a lot of questions.

Without curiosity, we stagnate. Growth occurs when we explore the unknown, challenge assumptions and seek fresh perspectives. Instead of fearing uncertainty, embrace it. Curiosity fuels innovation and propels us forward. Curiosity isn’t a distraction — it’s an investment. Agile minds adapt swiftly to change. To stay relevant, step outside your comfort zone. Attend workshops, read widely and engage in thought-provoking conversations. Encourage others to do the same. Curiosity isn’t just for kids; it’s the secret sauce for lifelong learning and expertise.

2. Navigate Risk

The keynote speaker at the Columbia Engineering school's graduation two decades ago — an exceptional senior executive in financial services — shared a pivotal piece of advice. Her secret to success? Calculated risks and strategic mobility. She emphasized the importance of not overstaying in any role once the necessary skills were acquired.

This wisdom resonated with me, shaping my approach to risk-taking. I realized that excessive risk aversion stifles progress. Instead, calculated risks propel us forward. Here’s what I learned. When faced with opportunities, I now weigh potential gains against losses. Whether it’s launching a new product, mastering a different platform or productivity tool, or exploring a new service delivery approach that is different in my industry, I consider the risk-reward balance. The greatest breakthroughs often lie beyond our comfort zones. By embracing calculated risks, we open doors to innovation and growth. It’s not about avoiding failure; it’s about maximizing our potential while minimizing negative consequences.

3. Adaptability Is a Superpower

As leaders, we face a perpetual challenge: embracing change and mastering new technologies. The rapid evolution of platforms promises productivity gains, cost reduction and enhanced user experiences. But how do we stay afloat in this sea of novelty?

Being comfortable with constant pivots is essential. While change can be overwhelming, it's also an opportunity. As a lifelong learner, I've leaned into this reality, overriding frustration with curiosity. Each new tool or methodology is a chance to enhance our business.

New technologies emerge incessantly. From blockchain to AI-driven marketing solutions, we must conceptually grasp these innovations. Attend webinars, read books, tinker with tools and explore online courses. But mastery goes beyond understanding; it's about practical application. Stay informed, engage with industry trends, and remember that what's cutting-edge today may become standard practice tomorrow. In this dynamic landscape, adaptability is our superpower.

4. Failure Is the Path to Mastery

Embrace failure as a catalyst for growth. Accepting failure as part of our learning journey is a pivotal shift. Unrealistic expectations and the pursuit of perfection can harm us individually and collectively. It took me a long time to learn this and here is what I have learned: failure isn't a dead end; it's a stepping stone.

When setbacks occur, analyze what went wrong. Adjust, iterate and learn. Let failure become a feedback loop for growth. Each failure sharpens our skills and provides fresh perspectives. Share these lessons — it's a sign of resilience, not weakness. Remember, the path to mastery is paved with failures. Fail forward, adapt and strengthen your mind and resolve.

5. Foster a Growth Mindset

When setbacks occur, don’t perceive them as defeats. Instead, view them as valuable learning experiences. Picture a potter shaping clay on a wheel. Sometimes, the vessel collapses, but the potter doesn’t give up. They learn from each collapse, adjusting their technique until they create a masterpiece. A growth mindset is like a resilient tree that bends with the wind but doesn’t break. Cultivate it. When storms of doubt or challenges arise, remind yourself: “This is an opportunity to learn.” Just as a tree strengthens its roots during storms, adversity strengthens your capacity and resilience.

Growth isn’t a distant peak you conquer and then forget. It’s a continuous journey — a winding path through forests of knowledge and across rivers of experience.
